The Lord of all creation came to our world of shame
To purchase our redemption, our freedom to obtain

The jealousy, and anger of those He came to save

During a sermon series on the gospel of Luke at our church, I was particularly struck by some messages on the suffering of Christ, both leading up to and during His crucifixion. I grew up in the church. I have heard about Jesus’ death and suffering for my entire life.
However, this time, I was surprised by something I had probably read numerous times. In Matthew 26:38, Jesus says that He is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. I found myself fixed on that verse. The anticipation of the suffering and torment that was awaiting Him was almost enough, by itself, to kill Jesus. It made me think anew about the weight of the penalty that Christ bore on the cross. The knowledge of the crushing burden He would bear was overwhelming. Yet, He chose to pay the price. This astonishes me.
I have frequently been befuddled by the cross. I don’t know why God would create a race of people that He knew would rebel against Him. Then, in advance, He would prepare the payment for our sin through His Son, Jesus Christ. This is beyond my comprehension. I am amazed at the price that Christ would pay to set a wretched, unworthy, rebellious sinner, like me, free.
As the apostle Paul says in Ephesians 3:19, this kind of love surpasses knowledge. I am amazed and pray that I would continue to be amazed by the wonder of God’s love for us.
